Types of Tesla Keys and How They Work

Tesla vehicles use three types of keys, each designed for different situations.

The key fob is shaped like a miniature Tesla and uses Bluetooth Low Energy for passive entry. Walk up to your car with the fob in your pocket and it unlocks automatically within about three feet. The fob has three touch-sensitive areas: tap the roof to lock or unlock, double-tap the front to open the frunk, and double-tap the rear to open the trunk. You can also hold the roof button to activate Summon, which moves the vehicle forward or backward without anyone inside.

The Tesla mobile app turns your smartphone into a digital key. Through Bluetooth, the app communicates with the vehicle to handle locking, unlocking, climate control, and more. Most Tesla owners rely on their phone key for daily driving.

The key card is a slim NFC card you tap on the B-pillar to unlock and on the center console to start the vehicle. It fits easily in a wallet and serves as a reliable backup when your phone battery dies or Bluetooth drops.

If you have lost your Tesla key card, the replacement process is straightforward when you work with a qualified automotive locksmith.

A new key card needs to be paired to your vehicle through the center console NFC reader. You place the new card on the console, authenticate with an existing key, and follow the touchscreen prompts to complete the setup.

At Bravo Locksmith, we carry Tesla-compatible key cards and handle the full programming process on-site. Whether you are at home, at work, or stranded in a parking lot across San Jose, we come to you and get the new card paired in minutes. Call us to schedule a replacement.

Tesla Key Fob Replacement and Programming

The Tesla key fob offers passive entry and remote control over your vehicle. When the fob battery runs low, you may notice reduced range or intermittent connectivity. Model S, Model 3, and Model Y fobs use a CR2032 battery, while the Model X fob requires a CR2354. Either way, the battery should be replaced roughly once a year to keep things working smoothly.

Programming a new key fob requires access to the vehicle touchscreen and an existing authenticated key. From the Controls menu, you select Locks, then Add Key, and follow the on-screen steps to pair the new fob.

Our technicians at Bravo Locksmith source and program Tesla key fobs on location. We handle the full process from start to finish, so you do not need to schedule an appointment at a Tesla service center or wait days for availability.

Locked Out of Your Tesla

A Tesla lockout can happen for several reasons. Your phone might lose Bluetooth connection, the key fob battery could die, or you may have left all key cards inside the vehicle. In some cases, a dead 12V auxiliary battery prevents the NFC reader from functioning entirely.

If you have the Tesla app installed on another device, you can try unlocking remotely. Otherwise, you need professional help to gain entry without damaging the vehicle.

Bravo Locksmith provides emergency Tesla lockout service across San Jose and Fremont. We arrive quickly, gain entry without causing any damage, and can reprogram or replace keys on the spot. Call any time you need us.

Tesla Key Replacement by Model

Each Tesla model has slightly different key configurations.

Model 3 uses the key card as its primary access method. Every Model 3 ships with two key cards, and the vehicle supports up to 19 paired keys total. Phone key access through the Tesla app is the most popular option for daily use.

Model Y shares the same key system as the Model 3. Key cards, key fobs, and the phone app all work the same way.

Model S produced before 2021 only supports the key fob and the Tesla app for access. There is no key card option on pre-refresh Model S vehicles. The 2021 refresh introduced key card and phone key support alongside the fob.

Model X follows the same pattern. Pre-2021 versions rely exclusively on the key fob, which includes integrated controls for the falcon wing doors. The 2021 and newer versions added key card and phone key compatibility. Note that the Model X fob uses a CR2354 battery rather than the CR2032 found in other models.

All current Tesla models support the phone key through the Tesla app.

How to Protect Your Tesla Keys

A few simple habits can help you avoid key-related problems down the road.

Keep a backup key card in your wallet at all times. If your phone dies or the fob stops working, that card gets you into the vehicle.

Replace the key fob battery at least once a year. That means a CR2032 for Model S, 3, and Y, or a CR2354 for Model X. A weak battery causes connection issues that may leave you locked out.

Enable PIN to Drive in your Tesla settings. This adds a layer of security that prevents anyone from driving the vehicle even if they have access to a key.

Consider setting up phone key on a second device as an additional backup. If your primary phone breaks or gets lost, the backup device keeps you covered.

When selling your vehicle or removing a driver, always delete their keys from the Tesla account to prevent unauthorized access.

FAQ About Tesla Key Replacement

Can a locksmith replace a Tesla key?

Yes. A qualified automotive locksmith with Tesla experience can source and program key cards and key fobs on-site. At Bravo Locksmith, we handle Tesla key replacement for all current models without requiring a trip to the dealership.

How long does Tesla key replacement take?

Most Tesla key replacements take under an hour. When you call Bravo Locksmith, we arrive at your location with the equipment and keys ready. The actual programming process takes just a few minutes once we are on-site.

Can I program a Tesla key myself?

You can pair a new key card or fob yourself if you already have an existing authenticated key. The process is done through the vehicle touchscreen under Controls and Locks. If you have lost all keys and cannot access the vehicle, a professional locksmith can assist.

What happens if I lose all my Tesla keys?

If all keys are lost, regaining access is more involved because pairing a new key normally requires an existing authenticated key. Bravo Locksmith can gain entry to the vehicle without damage and work with Tesla's systems to restore key access. In some cases, coordination with Tesla service may be needed. Call us for immediate assistance.

Does Tesla roadside assistance help with lockouts?

Tesla roadside assistance can help in some lockout situations, but wait times vary and they may not be able to program replacement keys on-site. A mobile locksmith typically responds faster and handles both entry and key replacement in one visit.

How many keys can a Tesla have?

Every Tesla supports up to 19 paired keys. This includes any combination of key cards, phone keys, and up to four key fobs. We recommend keeping at least two active keys at all times as a safety measure.

Tips From the Tesla Owner's Manual

Tesla key card — a slim NFC backup that fits in your wallet

These details come from the official Tesla Model 3 owner's manual and are worth knowing before you replace or add keys.

On vehicles made before January 2024, the key card reader is behind the cup holders on the center console. On 2024 and newer models, Tesla moved the reader to the wireless phone charger pad. Make sure you scan in the right spot when pairing a new key.

When adding a key fob, it must be at room temperature. Tesla warns that pairing a very cold key fob can fail, so bring it indoors and let it warm up before you start.

If you leave your paired phone inside the vehicle with Bluetooth enabled, the car treats it the same as leaving your keys inside with the doors unlocked. Always take your phone with you when you step away.

If you use the same key fob with more than one Tesla, passive entry will not work automatically. You need to tap the flat side of the fob on the card reader on the driver's door pillar to select which vehicle you want to unlock.

To remove a key you no longer want paired, go to Controls, then Locks on the touchscreen, tap the trash icon next to that key, and scan an existing key to confirm. Keep in mind that at least one key card or key fob must stay paired at all times — the vehicle will not let you delete the last one.

Adding keys through the Tesla mobile app requires app version 4.29.0 or higher and vehicle software 2022.40 or newer. Only the vehicle owner can pair keys through the app.
